Customer Spotlight: Isabelle Couture

Stitched by Hand: How Isabelle Couture Built a Website That Feels Real

Isabelle Cousineau got her first customer inquiry the same day her website went live. A year after opening Isabelle Couture, her sewing and alterations studio in downtown Ottawa, she now works full time as a seamstress.

Her business is built on handwork. So when it came time to go online, she wanted a website that reflected that, not one assembled in five minutes from stock photos and generic copy. This is the story of how a teacher became an Ottawa seamstress, and why she believes your website has to feel as real as the service you offer.

From the Classroom to the Cutting Table

Isabelle launched Isabelle Couture in her fifties, after a career in teaching that had become too stressful. She wanted to put her skills and creativity to work in a calmer setting, and sewing was the obvious choice.

“I have a passion for it and wanted to learn all there is to know about it,” she says.

She also had a mentor. “As chance would have it, I became close friends with a retired seamstress and business owner who became my inspiration.”

The moment it became real came once her workroom was set up. She built a cutting table to her own height and stocked up on notions, the buttons, zippers, threads, and trims every alteration job depends on. It cost her up front, but she sees it as an investment.

“Although it involved initial costs, it is definitely an asset and makes a great first impression when clients come to me.”

A Handmade Website, Live in One Phone Call

A handmade business deserves a handmade website, and Isabelle knew from the start that she didn’t want an AI-built one. “The whole idea of my business is handwork, after all!”

She found that other hosting services pushed her toward sites built in minutes from all-purpose pictures and wording. Instead, she designed her own in Canva, starting from a webpage layout and doing the rest herself.

Getting that design online was harder than expected. She couldn’t easily access an HTML version of her Canva design to upload, and on top of that, her previous host made it hard to get the information she needed to move her site to HostPapa. The project stalled for two months.

Then she called our support team and spoke with Zeum. In her Trustpilot review, she wrote that Zeum “easily found my past communications and guided me through the process. Before the call ended, my website was transferred, live and secure! What a relief!”

Today, we keep her site protected with domain privacy, Protection Power, and Automated Website Backups. “I really appreciate the human presence when calling them and their willingness to solve problems,” she says.

A Website That Does the Convincing

Isabelle’s two channels do different jobs. Her Instagram, @isabelle.couture.ottawa, shows recent work and reassures potential customers. Her website tells people searching for a seamstress that she’s in downtown Ottawa and has good reviews.

“The look and feel of my website truly represents what to expect, and customers reaching out to me need no further convincing,” she says.

The results came fast. “I was surprised to receive an inquiry the same day I published my website! Since then, I have had a steady stream of enthusiastic new customers, so that I now work full time.”

Isabelle Couture’s Advice for New Entrepreneurs

For Isabelle, being a business owner means “choosing my own path and striving for excellence.” She admits it’s hard work for the money, but she loves the sense of accomplishment and celebrates each milestone. As for the year ahead, she’s looking forward to whatever her clients bring through the door. “Variety is the spice of life.”

Her advice for anyone offering one-on-one services is to skip the shortcut. “A website built in a couple of minutes may not give you the results you want when you’re offering one-on-one services. Your website has to feel real.”
