BulletProof Security is a full-featured security solution that you can use to protect your WordPress site. This article describes how to install the free version of BulletProof Security and run the setup wizard to enable basic security features.
Installing BulletProof Security
There are two methods of installing BulletProof Security:
- Automatic installation
- Manual plugin installation
Automatic installation
Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins > Add New.
Type BulletProof Security in the Search plugins field. In the search results, find BulletProof Security and click Install Now.
When the installation is complete, click Activate.
When the plugin is active, the BPS Security menu item is added to your WordPress dashboard.
Manual installation
Go to https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/bulletproof-security/ and click Download to download the compressed zip file of the plugin.
Log in to your HostPapa Dashboard and click My cPanel.
In cPanel, click File Manager.
In the File Manager directory tree, select the wp-content/plugins directory. Click Upload.
Click Select File and select the compressed zip file of the plugin. When the upload is complete, return to the File Manager. Select the compressed zip file and click Extract. In the Extract dialog box, click Extract File.
When the extraction is complete, log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins and locate BulletProof Security in the list. Click Activate.
Setting up the BulletProof Security plugin
After you activate the plugin, go to BPS Security > Setup Wizard.
The Setup Wizard does a pre-installation check of the web server configuration, as well as file and directory permissions. If the results of the pre-installation check are displayed in green, click Setup Wizard to continue. If there are results displayed in red or blue, click Read Me and correct any errors before continuing.
When the Setup Wizard is finished, a message is displayed at the top of the page.
Results are displayed near the the bottom of the page. Scroll through the results to see the details of security settings applied by the Setup Wizard. If there are results displayed in red or blue, click Read Me and correct any errors before continuing.

There are many more security settings you can configure in the BulletProof Security plugin for WordPress. We recommend that you go through each menu in the plugin dashboard and decide which features are compatible with your site. Remember to test your site’s functionality after changing security and firewall settings.
