How to switch a Joomla! template

Templates are extensions that control the look and layout of your Joomla! site. Site templates are for your site’s front-end and Administrator templates are for the back-end. Once you’ve finished installing Joomla!, you can switch the default templates using the Template Manager.

Accessing the Template Manager

To access the Template Manager, first log in to the Joomla! administrator interface or back-end using the Administrator Username and Password. Once you’re in the Control Panel, follow the steps in How to Access the Template Manager in Joomla! to go to the Styles screen.

Switching default templates

You should now see the Template Manager Styles screen displaying a table of installed templates.

Change the default Joomla! template

By default, the table lists front-end or Site templates. To see which template is currently the default, look for the yellow star in the table’s Default column. To view installed back-end templates, select Administrator in the Site dropdown.

To switch to a different default Site template, do one of the following:

  • Click the template’s star in the Default column, OR
  • Select the template’s checkbox in the table and click the Default button on the screen’s toolbar.

To switch to a different default administrator template:

  1. Select Administrator in the Site dropdown.
  2. Follow the same steps as above.
