How to set up an Android device with a Microsoft Office 365 or Exchange ActiveSync account

Gmail supports Microsoft 365 and Exchange ActiveSync accounts and comes pre-installed on all Android devices. To add your Microsoft 365 or Exchange ActiveSync account to Gmail:

  1. Open the Settings app. Tap Accounts. If you can’t see Accounts, tap Users & accounts or Passwords & Accounts.
  2. Tap Add account (at the bottom).
  3. Tap Exchange.
  4. Enter your Microsoft 365 email and password.

How to set up a Microsoft 365 or Exchange ActiveSync account on your iPhone or iPad

When you add your Exchange ActiveSync account, you can sync your Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Notes with your iOS device.

  1. Tap Settings > Mail > Add Account > Microsoft Exchange or tap Accounts > Add Account if you are adding another account.
  2. Enter your email address, followed by the Next button. Additionally, you can enter an account description. 
  3. Tap Sign In to have your Exchange account information immediately retrieved. With modern authentication, you will be taken through a customized authentication process. 
  4. Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Notes can be synchronized. Once you have selected the preferred options to sync, tap Save

How to set up your Microsoft 365 account in Outlook for iOS

  1. Open the Outlook application on your iOS device.
  2. You will see the “Add account” screen if this is your first account to add. If you already have other email accounts configured in this application, tap the Menu, tap the Gear icon and then tap “Add account.”
  3. Enter your email address and tap Add account.
  4. Choose Microsoft Exchange if it does not recognize it automatically.
  5. Enter the password and tap the Sign In button.

How to set up your Microsoft 365 account in Outlook for Mac

If it is your first time opening the Outlook for Mac application, you should be prompted with the option to add your Exchange account. If you are not prompted with the option to add your Exchange account, follow these steps:

  1. Click Menu and select Preferences.
  2. In the Outlook preferences window, click on Accounts.
  3. Click the + (plus sign) in the bottom left and then New Account.
  4. Enter your email address and click Continue.
  5. Enter your password and click Sign In/Add account.

How to set up your Microsoft 365 account in Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Outlook 2016+

  1. Select File > Add account.
  2. Enter your email address and click Connect.
  3. Enter your password if prompted and click Ok/Finish.

How to set up your Microsoft 365 account in Mozilla Thunderbird

The Mail Account Setup page will open if it is your first time opening Thunderbird. If the Mail Account Setup page doesn’t open, follow these steps: 

  1. Click the Thunderbird Menu and select Account Settings.
  2. On the Account Settings page, under Account Actions, click Add Mail Account.
  3. In the Mail Account Setup dialogue box, do the following:
  • In the Your full name box, enter the name that you want to appear on the “From” line in your outgoing messages.
  • In the Email Address box, enter your email address.
  • In the Password box, enter your password. Click Continue (Windows) or click Next (Mac). Thunderbird will try to find the settings you need to configure for your account.
  1. Select IMAP and click Done.
  2. Cancel the password prompt window if it pops up.
  3. Go to Account Settings > Server Settings.
  4. At the Authentication method, select OAuth2.
  5. Go to Account Settings > Outgoing Server.
  6. At the Authentication method, select OAuth2.
  7. Close the Account Settings.  Select your Inbox, and the Microsoft 365 login page should appear to complete the process.

Several email apps support Modern authentication. Typically, the built-in email programs for all popular platforms offer Modern authentication. Thus the solution may be to ensure that your device is running the most recent app version. If the email app is up-to-date but still uses Basic authentication, you may need to remove the account from the device and re-add it. If it is still not working, check the application Help page to find out if it supports Modern authentication.
