How to re-point your domain name

To re-point your domain name (to link your domain name to a different hosting package) you will need to change the domain name server (DNS) entries listed on the domain registration information. In this article, we’ll show you how.

Re-point your domain name to HostPapa

For specific DNS settings information, please reference the HostPapa Welcome Email you received shortly after completing your purchase. Within it will be the exact DNS nameservers you’ll need.

If your domain name is registered with HostPapa or being transferred to HostPapa, we can make this change for you if needed.

If your domain name is not registered with HostPapa or being transferred here, you will need to make this update yourself with the company where your domain name is registered (i.e., the registrar). We have numerous tutorial videos on how to update DNS entries through specific registrars. If we don’t have a tutorial video for your registrar, please contact your registrar directly to determine how to change the DNS entries.

If you aren’t sure who your registrar is, you can log in to your HostPapa dashboard and use the whois lookup tool you can also use any similar WhoIs tools. Then, type in your domain (without the www.) name, and you’ll get a wealth of information about your domain name, including the registrar.

Updating your DNS

If your domain is not a promotional one, you can update your DNS yourself. Learn how in this Knowledge Base article

Important: If you are changing the DNS entries yourself, please ensure that the HostPapa DNS entries are the only DNS entries listed. Some hosting companies use three, four, or more DNS entries. They all must be removed, or visitors will have trouble connecting to your website.

Note: For your primary domain to qualify for the ‘free domain registration’ offer, it must be registered through HostPapa, and the DNS entries must point to a HostPapa hosting account.

If you need help with your HostPapa account, please open a support ticket from your dashboard.
