What is a domain extension?

A domain extension refers to the last part of a web address. So for instance in example.com, it would be .com. This section can also be referred to as the top-level domain (TLD), and can come in forms such as:

  • generic top-level domains or gTLDs (.com, .org, .net)
  • country code top-level domains or ccTLDs (.ca, .fr, .au)
