An IP address is a unique series of numbers that identifies a computer or domain on the Internet. In the web hosting industry, most web hosting accounts on shared web servers have the same IP address as one or more other accounts.
A dedicated IP address is an address used by a single web hosting account. The primary reasons for having a dedicated IP address are:
- To use a private (that is, not shared) SSL certificate, which requires that the domain have a dedicated IP address.
- To be able to access the website or log in via FTP by IP address instead of the domain name or server name.
- To have protection from sharing an IP address that is blacklisted due to spam or other unauthorized activity by another server user.
- To have better site performance during high traffic periods.
