If you recently received an email asking you to verify your domain name, you may be wondering what it’s about (and if it’s legitimate). Please read on for some very important info.
Nominet new domains
Why are you getting this email?
Recently, Nominet (the domain registry that controls all .uk domain names) instituted some very important new rules. These rules affect domains that contain “.uk” and have been implemented as part of Nominet’s commitment to data quality published in their WHOIS database.
The email verification process is initiated when a .uk domain is registered or when the owner of a .uk domain makes changes to the domain’s contact information. If the registration and/or contact details are not correct, are incomplete in any way, or cannot be verified by Nominet’s address validation partner, you as the domain holder will receive an email from HostPapa inviting you to update and confirm your contact information.
This email (subject line: VERIFICATION REQUIRED – Please verify your domain name(s) as soon as possible) contains a verification link. You must complete the verification process or your domain will get disabled. The verification window set by Nominet is short – within 30 days – so it’s advisable to complete the required information as quickly as possible once you’ve received the email. If you do not click on the link in this verification email yourself (sorry, we at HostPapa are unable to do it for you), your domain will be affected.
What happens when you click the verification link?
Clicking the verification link will open a webpage containing instructions for validating your information. You may also be required to upload a document to prove that the name and address assigned to your domain name are correct. Once you have completed the instructions provided via the link, no further action is required.
What happens if you don’t click the verification link in time?
If you don’t click the link within the 30 day timeframe that Nominet has mandated, your domain will be disabled. This means that your website will display an error page, or even a blank page.
What happens if your website appears to be disabled? How can you fix this?
If your domain has been disabled, clicking the verification link in the email and completing the verification process will fix this.
What happens if you can’t find the verification email?
If you cannot find the verification email in your inbox and are certain you should have received one, please submit a support ticket to HostPapa Customer Care and we would be pleased to assist you.
