How to reset or change your Google password

Google Workspace makes it easy to update your password and securely retrieve forgotten passwords at any time so you can maintain your online security. In this article, we’ll show you how to change your Google password, as well as how to reset it on Gmail and Google for Work administrator or user accounts.

Change your Google password

Sign in to Google with the account whose password you’d like to change. You will change youraccount@yourbusiness.com password if you continue without signing in to a different account.

  1. Select Security
  2. Select Signing to Google.
  3. Choose Password.
  4. Enter your current password to verify your identity.
  5. Create a new password and enter it twice.
  6. Click Change password.

Reset your Google password

Note: The steps to reset your Google password vary based on the type of account. Make sure you’re following the correct steps for your account. 

I’m a Google for Work domain administrator

If you’re one of only two admins in your domain, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to admin.google.com.
  2. Click Need help?
  3. Click I don’t know my password.
  4. Enter your administrator email address. 
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Submit a CAPTCHA (if prompted) and enter the last password you remember. 
  7. Click Continue again.
  8. Google will send a password recovery email to your backup email address, or you’ll need to verify domain ownership.

If there are three or more admins in your domain, you’ll need to ask one of the other admins to reset your password using the instructions below.

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console.
  2. Click Users.
  3. Click the three vertical dots in the user list and locate the user you want to change
  4. Click Reset password.
  5. Enter the user’s new password.
  6. Check the Require a change of password box to force this user to change their password the next time they sign in.
  7. Click Reset Password to save your changes.
  8. After you reset the user’s password, you must send them their new password.
I’m a Google for Work user 

If you’re a Google for Work user whose email address ends with mybusiness.com instead of @gmail.com, you do not have administrator access to your domain. You’ll need to contact your domain administrator to reset your password.

If you are the administrator for your domain, please follow the instructions above to reset your password.

I’m a @gmail.com user
  1. Go to admin.google.com and click Need help?
  2. Click I don’t know my password.
  3. Enter your email address. 
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Submit a CAPTCHA (if prompted) and enter the last password you remember. 
  6. Click Continue again.
  7. Submit the required information to confirm your identity and reset your account password.
