How to locate .htaccess files

What is an .htaccess file?

.htaccess is a configuration file you can use to control some behaviour and security settings on Apache-powered websites. The file includes directives, or configuration rules, that are read by the web server and must be named .htaccess, including the period at the beginning. Depending on which applications you’re using with your website, you may have more than one .htaccess file, although there can be only one in each directory.

Finding .htaccess files in the cPanel File Manager

Log in to your HostPapa cPanel and click File Manager.

Click Settings in the upper right corner.

Make sure Show Hidden Files  (dotfiles) is selected and click Save.

You should now be able to see any existing .htaccess files in any directory. To quickly find all .htaccess files on your site, select All Your Files in the search dropdown list and enter htaccess, then click Go.

All .htaccess files on your site are displayed in the Search Results dialog box. Double-click any file in the list to open its directory.

To edit an .htaccess file, right-click the file and select Edit. To create a new file, click New File and name the file .htaccess.
