Adding metadata to your site

To get more people to visit your site, you will eventually need to learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). However, there are some easy steps you can take, and HostPapa will show you the first step, which is metadata.

The content on each of your webpages is important, but metadata provides a needed boost to help your online business be discovered on the Internet. One of its most well-known ingredients is meta tags.

To learn how to access your Website Builder to get started, please visit this article.

What is a meta tag?

Google and many other search engines look through what are known as meta tags. Their reason for doing so is that meta tags contain a lot of important information about your site.

It’s incredible to think that improving your meta tags will result in your website appearing higher in search engine results.

Using good keywords

To improve your meta tags, it’s essential to pick good keywords. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of keywords, please visit a page on your website (or someone else’s website if needed).

Now, please work your way through this list of actions:

  1. Read a webpage and decide what the topic of that webpage is. For example, is it about sports equipment, movies, or gardening services?
  2. Make a list of words that are synonymous with the webpage topic. If a page is about gardening services, some keywords may be planting, landscaping, or lawn repair. Please consider these words to be keywords.
  3. Decide which keywords are most important. If you like, you can make a list with the most important keywords at the top of the list.

You can enter your chosen keywords for each webpage on your site by going inside the Page Options administration panel.

Site keywords are defined in the Site Properties administration panel. Please note that if no page keywords are defined, the page will use the site keywords instead.

Creating a site title

You can now use your keywords to create a site title. When your website appears in Google’s search results, the site title is the first thing Internet users will see. When it comes to length, try to limit the title to 5—8 words (the text after that may be cut).

Please note that rules regarding metadata can and do change, so always check Google’s rules.

Your site title should include the most important keywords that describe your website’s most interesting features. To create a good site title, you can:

  • Remove unnecessary words such as: a, the, and, etc.
  • Avoid repeating keywords.

To change your site title, please:

  1. Click the Control Panel option on the top right of your website Admin.
  2. Select the Site Properties.

Adding a description

The description is a one-sentence summary of what your page or website is about. Your description needs to be informative but not too long. Please aim for a description of 30—40 words. Please note that:

  1. If a page has no description, the site description will be displayed as a page description.
  2. If you don’t add a site description, search engines such as Google will display a part of your website content instead of a description.

To add a description to your pages and website, please:

  • Use the Page Options and Site Properties administration panels.
