What's the difference between Piwik and Matomo?
Piwik and Matomo are the same platform. The software was originally called Piwik when it launched in 2007. In 2018, the project was officially rebranded to Matomo. Today, "Piwik" is still widely used as an informal name, particularly by people familiar with the older branding. When you install Piwik using our 1-click installer, you're installing the current version of Matomo.
Is Matomo (Piwik) really free?
Do I need technical knowledge to install Piwik on HostPapa?
Not at all. Every HostPapa plan includes Softaculous, a 1-click app installer that handles the entire Matomo installation automatically. You choose the domain, set a username and password, and click Install. Softaculous creates the database and configures all the settings for you. The whole process takes about 3 minutes.
Will Matomo (Piwik) work with WordPress?
Yes. Matomo has an official WordPress plugin that lets you add the tracking code to your site without touching any code. Once you've installed Matomo on your HostPapa server, install the plugin on your WordPress site, enter your Matomo URL and authentication token, and tracking starts immediately. The plugin also lets you view basic analytics reports directly inside your WordPress dashboard.
Is self-hosted Matomo GDPR compliant?
Self-hosted Matomo is widely recognized as one of the most GDPR-friendly analytics options available. Because all data stays on your own server and is never shared with third parties, you have full control over data retention, consent management, and user privacy. What are the technical requirements for running Matomo (Piwik)?
Matomo requires PHP 7.2.5 or higher, a MySQL 5.5+ or MariaDB 10.0+ database, and at least 128MB of PHP memory.
