How to Transfer Your Domain to HostPapa
You can transfer most domains in just a few simple steps.
Prepare Your Domain
Log in to your current domain registrar to prepare your domain for transfer. Make sure your domain is more than 60 days old and not locked by recent changes, as required by ICANN policies. We recommend confirming your administrative email before requesting your EPP transfer key.
Search For Your Domain Name
HostPapa will say that your domain is unavailable. This is completely normal. Look for the message "Do you own this domain? Click to Transfer your domain to HostPapa" to continue the domain transfer process.
Start the Transfer
Follow the instructions during the checkout process to enter your authorization code and initiate the process of transferring your domain to HostPapa.
Approve the Transfer
Your current domain registrar will send you a confirmation email to finalize the process. Respond to that email quickly for the fastest transfer time. Domain transfers usually take 5 to 7 days to complete after approving the transfer.

Fast, No-Hassle Transfers
What Happens When You Transfer
When you transfer a domain to HostPapa, you keep your domain name but move the registration and management to our platform.
- Your domain registration renews with HostPapa according to our transparent pricing.
- You gain access to our DNS management tools to configure records for your website, email, and other services.
- Your existing website and email services can continue to work during the transfer if they are correctly configured.
- You can choose to migrate hosting and email to HostPapa for a fully integrated solution.
To avoid surprises, we clearly separate what is included in a transfer from services that may require additional configuration or migration.

What Transfers And What Does Not
Understanding what moves with your domain helps you plan a smooth transition.
What typically transfers:
- Domain registration and expiration date alignment, according to registry rules. - Nameserver settings, if you choose to keep your current external DNS provider.
- Control of DNS configuration once you use HostPapa nameservers and DNS tools.
What does not automatically transfer:
- Website files, applications, and databases. These require website or hosting migration.
- Email accounts and stored messages at your previous provider. These require email migration.
- Custom DNS records hosted at a third‑party provider, if you change nameservers without recreating them.
If you plan to move your website and email to HostPapa as well, our team can help you schedule a coordinated migration to minimize downtime.

What happens to my remaining registration time?
You keep all your remaining time. When you transfer a domain, we add one full year to your current expiration date. For example, if your domain expires in 6 months and you transfer to us with a 1-year term, your new expiration date will be 18 months from now.
How long does a domain transfer take?
Most transfers complete within a few days once you have approved all confirmation messages. The exact timing depends on your current registrar and registry rules. Contact our support team to discuss specific transfer timelines to minimize downtime and ensure your website and email remain active and accessible throughout the process.
Will my website or email go offline during the transfer?
In most cases, your website and email stay online if you keep your current hosting and DNS settings during the transfer. Any change to nameservers or DNS records should be planned carefully to avoid outages. Talk with our PapaSquad support team for more information.
Can I transfer a domain that I registered recently?
ICANN policies generally require that a domain be at least 60 days old before transferring between registrars. Certain recent changes to registrant information can also trigger a 60‑day lock.
Do I have to move my hosting to transfer my domain?
No. You can keep your existing hosting provider and simply move the domain registration to HostPapa. You can later migrate hosting and email if you decide to consolidate everything with us.
Can I transfer an expired domain?
It depends on the status. If your domain expired recently and is still in the grace period at your current registrar, you may be able to transfer it. However, you may need to renew it first. Domains in redemption status cannot be transferred. Contact your current registrar to check your domain's status.
What if I do not have my authorization code?
Contact your current registrar to request your authorization code. Most registrars provide this through their control panel in the domain management section. Some registrars will email the code to the administrative contact email address on file. If you have trouble obtaining the code, your current registrar's support team should be able to help.
Can I cancel a transfer in progress?
Yes. You can decline or cancel a transfer request before it completes. Log in to your HostPapa account and go to the domain transfers section to cancel an incoming transfer. You can also contact your current registrar to reject the transfer on their end.
Why was my transfer rejected?
Common reasons for transfer rejection include: domain is locked, incorrect authorization code, administrative contact did not approve the transfer, domain is too new (less than 60 days old), domain was recently transferred, or there are registry restrictions on the domain extension. Check your email for specific details about why the transfer was rejected and correct the issue before trying again.
What is the transfer authorization code?
The authorization code (also called EPP code, auth code, or transfer key) is a unique security code assigned to your domain. It proves that you have permission to transfer the domain. This code is typically 6 to 16 characters long and contains a mix of letters and numbers.
