Node.js Hosting Explained
What Is Node.js VPS Hosting?
Node.js is the open source JavaScript runtime that lets you run JavaScript on a server. Its event-driven, non-blocking design makes it a strong fit for REST and GraphQL APIs, real-time apps with WebSockets, and microservices that handle many connections at once.
Unlike a PHP site, a Node.js app is a long-running process. It starts once, listens on a port, and keeps running between requests. That's why Node.js hosting needs an environment where you can install the runtime you want, keep processes alive after crashes and reboots, and route web traffic to the right port.
A HostPapa VPS gives you that control. You choose the Node.js version and package manager, open the ports you need, and decide how your app is supervised and proxied.
Why Choose HostPapa
A Reliable Home for Your Node.js Apps
Node.js is fast when the server under it is. HostPapa VPS plans give your apps dedicated resources and root access, so you can tune the environment around your code instead of working around shared limits.

How to Deploy a Node.js App on a HostPapa VPS
A production Node.js setup takes six steps: install the runtime, ship your code, keep it running, and put a reverse proxy with HTTPS in front of it.
Step 1: Install Node.js. Connect over SSH and install a current LTS release with nvm or NodeSource packages. Use nvm if you need several versions side by side.
Step 2: Deploy your code. Clone your repository onto the server, then run npm ci --omit=dev (or the pnpm or Yarn equivalent) to install exact production dependencies from your lockfile.
Step 3: Set environment variables. Store secrets like database URLs and API keys in environment variables or a .env file that's excluded from Git, and set NODE_ENV=production.
Step 4: Keep it running. Start your app with PM2 or a systemd service so it restarts after crashes and reboots. PM2's cluster mode can run one process per CPU core.
Step 5: Put Nginx in front. Configure Nginx as a reverse proxy that listens on ports 80 and 443 and forwards requests to your app's local port, such as 127.0.0.1:3000. Your app never has to run as root or bind to a public port.
Step 6: Add HTTPS. Point your domain's DNS at the VPS, then use Certbot to issue a free Let's Encrypt certificate for Nginx and set it to renew automatically.

Pick the Right Environment
Which Plan Fits Your Node.js Project?
Choose an Unmanaged VPS if you want full control over Node.js versions, process managers, firewall rules, and reverse proxy settings.
Choose a Managed VPS if you'd like our server administrators to handle operating system patches, updates, and migration help.
Choose a dedicated server if you run high-traffic APIs, many services on one machine, or workloads that need full hardware isolation.

Why use a VPS instead of shared hosting for Node.js?
Node.js apps are long-running processes that need their own port, a process manager, and steady memory. A VPS gives you root access and dedicated CPU and RAM, so your app keeps running reliably under load.
Which Node.js versions can I use?
Any version you need. With root access you can install current LTS releases with nvm or NodeSource packages and run several versions side by side for different projects.
How do I point my domain at my Node.js app?
Run your app on a local port such as 3000, then configure Nginx or Apache as a reverse proxy that listens on ports 80 and 443 and forwards requests to it.
Can I run several Node.js apps on one VPS?
Yes. Run each app on its own port under PM2 or systemd, and use Nginx server blocks to route each domain or subdomain to the right app.
Can I use WebSockets and Socket.IO?
Yes. Nginx can proxy WebSocket connections once you pass the Upgrade and Connection headers, so real-time features work behind your reverse proxy.
Does HostPapa offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every plan is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can deploy your Node.js app and test performance risk-free.
