Docker Hosting Explained
What Is Docker Hosting?
Docker packages an app and everything it needs into a container, so it runs the same way on your laptop, in CI, and in production. Docker Compose lets you define a multi-container stack, such as an app, a database, and a cache, in a single compose.yaml file.
Running Docker needs root access, because Docker Engine manages container networking, storage, and process isolation at the operating system level. That's why Docker doesn't run on shared web hosting.
HostPapa VPS plans support Docker. You get root access to install Docker Engine, dedicated resources for your containers, and the control to configure networking, volumes, and a reverse proxy your way.
Why Choose HostPapa

How to Run Docker on a HostPapa VPS
Getting a production Docker setup running takes six steps. Step 4 is the one most people miss.
Step 1: Install Docker Engine. Connect over SSH and install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin from Docker's official package repository, which is usually newer than your distribution's own package.
Step 2: Limit Docker access. Adding a user to the docker group gives them root-level control of the server, so only add trusted accounts.
Step 3: Define your stack. Describe your services, networks, and volumes in compose.yaml, then start everything with docker compose up -d.
Step 4: Watch your firewall. Ports you publish with Docker can bypass UFW rules, because Docker manages its own firewall rules. If a reverse proxy sits in front, publish app ports on 127.0.0.1 only, such as 127.0.0.1:8080:80.
Step 5: Add a reverse proxy and HTTPS. Use Nginx, Traefik, or Caddy to route each domain to the right container and handle TLS certificates.
Step 6: Keep data safe and images current. Store persistent data in named volumes and back them up. Pull updated images regularly and recreate containers to pick up security fixes.

Pick the Right Environment
Which Plan Fits Your Docker Workload?
Choose an Unmanaged VPS if you want full control over Docker Engine, Compose, networking, and your reverse proxy.
Choose a Managed VPS if you'd rather have our server administrators handle operating system patches, updates, and migration help.
Choose a dedicated server if you run many containers, resource-heavy services, or workloads that need full hardware isolation.

Can I run Docker on HostPapa web hosting?
No. Docker needs root access to manage containers, which shared web hosting doesn't provide. HostPapa VPS plans support Docker.
Can I use Docker Compose?
Yes. Install the Compose plugin with Docker Engine, define your services in compose.yaml, and run docker compose up -d to start the whole stack.
Why isn't my firewall blocking a Docker port?
Docker writes its own firewall rules for published ports, which can bypass UFW. Publish ports on 127.0.0.1 when a reverse proxy handles public traffic, or add rules to Docker's DOCKER-USER chain.
Can I manage containers with a web interface?
Yes. Tools like Portainer run as a container and give you a browser-based dashboard. Protect them with strong passwords and HTTPS.
How do I back up containers?
Back up your named volumes and any bind-mounted data, plus your compose.yaml and environment files. Images can be pulled again, but data can't.
Does HostPapa offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every plan is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can deploy your containers and test performance risk-free.
