How Does Shared Web Hosting Work?
When you buy a shared hosting plan, your website's files, databases, and email accounts are stored on a physical server that HostPapa maintains in one of our data centers. That server is shared with other hosting accounts, which is what keeps costs low compared to VPS or dedicated hosting.
Each account on the server gets a defined allocation of system resources: CPU cores, memory, storage space, I/O bandwidth, and entry points (the number of simultaneous processes that can serve your website content). On our servers, these resources are isolated using CloudLinux LVE technology. That means other accounts on the same server can't consume your allocation, even during their own traffic spikes.
When a visitor types your domain name into their browser, the Domain Name System (DNS) routes their request to our server. The server retrieves your website files from NVMe storage and delivers them to the visitor. If you have a CDN enabled (included on all plans), static assets like images and stylesheets are served from edge servers located closer to the visitor, reducing latency and improving page load times worldwide.
