Is Gallery 2 free?
Yes. Gallery 2 is released under the GNU General Public License and is completely free to download and use. You only pay for the hosting plan that runs it.
What are the system requirements for Gallery 2?
Gallery 2 needs a web server running Apache, PHP 4.3 or higher, and a MySQL database (version 3.x, 4.x, or 5.x). It also requires ImageMagick or NetPBM to be installed on the server for image processing. Every HostPapa plan meets all of these requirements, and you can choose your PHP version directly in cPanel.
Does Gallery 2 work with PHP 8?
The original Gallery 2 release was built for PHP 4.x and 5.x. A community-maintained fork adds PHP 8 compatibility. If you need full PHP 8 support, we recommend Gallery 3, the current official release, which supports PHP 8 natively as of version 3.1.5. Our cPanel lets you select the right PHP version for your installation, even if you intend to use the older version.
Can I run Gallery 2 on a simple web hosting plan?
Yes. Gallery 2 is designed to run on our Web Hosting, and all HostPapa plans give it everything it needs: Apache, PHP, MySQL, and ImageMagick. For a small personal gallery, the Essentials plan is plenty. For a large community site with hundreds of photos and users, the Premium or Elite plan gives you the extra database space and server resources you'll need.
How do I install Gallery 2 on HostPapa?
You can install Gallery 2 in minutes using the Softaculous Apps Installer, which is included in cPanel on every HostPapa plan. Log in to cPanel, open Softaculous, search for "Gallery 2," click install, and follow the setup wizard. No file uploads or command-line work are needed.
How much storage do I need for a Gallery 2 photo website?
It depends on how many photos you plan to host and at what resolution. A collection of 1,000 high-resolution photos averaging 5MB each takes up around 5GB of storage. If your photos are closer to 500KB each, then you have room for 10,000 images. Our plans start at 25GB NVMe storage, which is enough for most personal and small community galleries. If your collection grows, you can upgrade to a plan with more storage without losing any data or settings.
What's the difference between Gallery 2 and Gallery 3?
Gallery 2 was the second major version of the Gallery Project, released in 2005. Its core development ended in 2012. Gallery 3 is a complete rewrite released in 2010 and actively maintained, with PHP 8 support added in version 3.1.5, released November 2021.
Gallery 3 is the version we recommend for new installations. If you already have a Gallery 2 site, you can choose to keep it or upgrade it to the newer version.
