Why Go Green?

Why Go Green?

Over 80% of greenhouse gas emissions produced by man-made causes in the U.S. are the result of burning natural gas, oil, coal, and other fossil fuels. Half - that's 50% - of energy consumption is by corporations. Put those two statistics together and you get the short answer to why HostPapa felt the call to go green.

Renewable or "green" energy is produced without the consumption of precious natural resources, instead created by harnessing the power of the sun, wind, water, biomass, and biogas, to name a few. Renewable energy produces significantly less carbon emissions, and in some cases, none at all.

Aiming to do our part (and maybe some of yours too) to fight global climate change, HostPapa has taken - and still is taking - bold measures to switch over our datacenters and administrative headquarters to 100% renewable electricity suppliers.

Besides the obvious benefits to our environment, our health, and that of our progeny, going green also provides significant economic benefits to local communities. Since most sources of green power are smaller, locally-based businesses, switching over to procuring energy from renewable electricity providers stimulates local economies.

Additionally, by being green, HostPapa reduces the strain on North America's overburdened energy infrastructure, going a long way to securing a sustainable future for our children.

Among the steps that HostPapa has taken in this metamorphosis to a green web host is purchasing our electricity from suppliers that participate in one of the following programs:

Green-E Certified

Energy companies boasting the Green-E label voluntarily adhere to the strict environmental and consumer protection guidelines set by the top independent certification body for renewable energy products in the U.S. By participating in this program, we subject ourselves to period audits of each and every megawatt hour of green energy used. Baring the Green-E Certified label gives you and your site visitors the confidence in supplier qualification and quality assurance that only a third-party verifier can provide.

Green Tags

Complementing the Green-E certification program, these renewable energy certificates are another way to support the reduction of harmful carbon emissions akin to purchasing power directly from renewable energy providers. Like the 2007 Academy Awards, HostPapa is a purchaser of Green Tags.

EcoLogo Environmental Choice Progam

This mark is for Canadian renewable electricity providers while the Green-E label is for U.S. suppliers. Run by Canada's government, the EcoLogo program certifies the leaders in more than 300 different categories of products according the strictest environmental standards.
